The bottom of the shoe has (cushion?) gaps which are filled by protrusions built into the original insole. If you want to replace the original insoles with orthotics, etc., they won't have the original insoles' protrusions that fit into the shoe's bottom. The result is air pockets trapped between your orthotics and the bottom of the shoes. It makes it super noisy to walk in. Steer clear if you intend to replace the insoles.

I recently purchased these shoes online. I was hoping for better fitting shoes buying factory direct that have not been picked over in a department store by countless others leaving behind poorer fitting unwanted remnants. I was not disappointed. These have been the most comfortable pair of shoes I have purchased in over two years. I absolutely love them. They do fit looser than my regular shoes size, about half size larger. I have only two disappointments. The first is that there were not other same sizes available that I could duplicate my order. Second, and by far the worse, my shoes have developed a squeak as I walk. I would have expected this to develop after a year of good wear, so you can understand my surprised disappointment. I'm not so sure I would buy another pair. I've never been disappointed with the fit of Rockport shoes.
